The Anime Club of Michigan is back with three days of anime worth watching.
When talking to younger anime fan, it is surprising how little is known of the older anime shows, (anything before 1992.) Wizard's magazine, Anime Insider, refers this as "Old School" or "Your Father's Anime". But the history of anime in America goes back another 20 years. True "Old School" can be pegged at those titles before 1986, BRT, (Before RoboTech)
This time around we're screening more of the older good title.
Subject Matter: Granted, most of the anime presented is of a sci-fi or fantasy nature. But anime also depicts "real life". This doesn't mean that anime is free from modern expressions or real life situations. As such, "Real Language" (adult and adult situations) may be found in anime. As such, we try to keep ahead of the situation and give warning. Individual shows are annotated as such, any questions, just ask.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION - Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl
Thanks to AnimEgo, we are able to make a special pre-release screening of Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl, at 12:15 Saturday.
Running on Japanese television at about the same time as Ranma, the series is about Inokuma Yawara and her grandfather's wish for her to be on the Japanese Olympic Team for the Games in Barcelona Spain, 1992. At 124 episodes, the series paces itself as a weekly observance of Yawara as she balances school, training, and a love life as the Olympic date approaches.

Runiko Takahashi is one of the most recognized manga artist in Japan. As such, her manga projects get selected for anime productions. Today's generation of anime fan knows her mostly for Inuyasha. But she didn't start with just this. "Dust Bin", "Fire Tripper", Super Gal", "Mermaid's Forest", (and more), all contributed to her success. Today, we will be showing a retrospective of her works concerning television projects.
1:00 Urusei Yatsura - So the earth is being invaded, (again). Random chance, (dumb luck) selects Ataru Moroboshi to be the one who is to faces off against one of the invaders in the aliens favorite game, tag. Miraculously, Ataru wins and the alien girl, Lum, accepts his statement, as a proposal of marriage. So as the invading armies leave, the alien girl stays to be with her Darling".
Remember My Love - Ataru takes Lum on a date to a carnival show, (Lum's decision to motivate Ataru.) However, the carnival is actually a plan to split up Lum and Ataru.
2:30 Maison Ikoku - Godai is tying to get into a good school. (This is a reference to "exam hell week", a series of exams where students try to get into the better secondary schools.) Due to the commotion caused by his neighbors at the apartment building, Godai knows he has to move out if he ever wants to place in the exams, but changes his mind when smitten by the lovely new manager.
3:20 Ranma ½ - As a child, Ranma gets taken to China for martial combat training. Returning to Japan as a teenager, him and his father have to hide at a friend's dojo because of a magical accident that happened in training. When wet, Ranma becomes a girl and father changes to a panda.
While in China, Ranma and father crash a village champion's celebration, (eating the first prize). The defeated champion vows revenge on the girl and pet, following them back to Japan.
4:45 Macross Plus - 28 years after the launch after the launch of the first colonization fleet, (Macross - Looking Back 2012), humanity has spread itself to the stars.
It is the planet "Eden" where culture and military objectives continue. Idol singer Sharon Apple, a virturoid, is about to receive emotions which become tainted by the involvement of Myung Fang Lone. Seven years past, she was involved with two military pilots Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman, These two are currently trying to prove who will be the top pilot for the new Supernova Fighter Project, the next generation of Valkyries. We're going to going with showing 2 parts of the OAV. The movie version made from the 4 OAVs is too cutup to follow smoothly.

11:00 Astro Boy - Professor Tenma thought how wonderful it would be to have his recently deceased son back, so he created a robot in his image. But the professor soon realized this invention was not a replacement. Abandoned, the robot child wanders, until it found a new place in society, a crime fighting hero.

1:00 Naruto - Does anyone not know this series? We fussed a bit about showing this series because as a rule, we don't show series that are running on television, It's too easy to burn out on it. But like a good many anime series on American television, it's already cutup to fit American time slots , which is why we will be showing the un-cut version with the original opening and music.
It's Neji vs Naruto as the two go into the Chunin Exam Finals in a test of their abilities.
2:15 Slayers Try - (It's been years since we've played this at a convention. There is high expectation this will look better than ever since it is remastered by Fundimation.) During a search for the Clair Bible, Lina, Gourry, Zelgadis, and Amelia coincidently meet up again. A mysterious priest, Xelloss, seems to know something about the passages they're looking for, but he seems to cause more trouble than helping.
3:30 Gilgamesh - A terrorist action in the Middle East unleashed catastrophe on the world. With the sky looking like a watery mirror, electronics no longer function. In this ruined world, siblings Tatsuya and Kiyoko, have their runaway lifestyle takes a strange turn as they find themselves between two opposing forces, Gilgamesh and Orga.
4:40 Megazone 23 pt 2 - (Some circle have attributed this OAV as the inspiration for the Matrix series of movies. If you see any anime today, this is the one to see.)
The Megazone is a city controlled by an Artificial Intelligence which has the city locked into a 1970's era.
When the military took control of the city, (first film), Shogo lost the prototype Garland motorbike back to the military. BD. is now in full control.
Believing their salvation from a mysterious invasion force is in new weapons, B.D. is bent on breaking EVE's final protection program. (the Megazone controlling AI.) Full control of Megazone 23 would mean unfettered weapons development.
EVE, realizing the military programmers are close to cracking her systems, needs to get Shogo back to the Garland and the military distracted. This needs to happen before the Dezalg invades the city, and the Final Solution, A.D.A.M. is activated.

11:00 Project Ako 2 - One of the silliest pieces of anime to survive from the "old days" Take two high school girls (wait till you see their parents), an alien evacuation, and an ever escalating battle over the friendship of a ditzy princess as once again this Battle Royal progresses from the school yard to engulf the city.
12:00 Mars Daybreak- Life on Mars is hard for those who live here. As the economy worsens, work becomes scarce and food becomes expensive and highly prized. Gram and his friends try to do the best they can but, he finds himself on the run with the most notorious pirates on Mars. The only problem is he soon starts to enjoy the adventure.
1:00 Moonlight Mile - Saruwatari Gorou and "Lostman" Jack F. Woodbridge, they feel they've seen everything on earth. When an energy hungry world finds a new energy source on the moon, the pair sets their sights on space, and conquering the next frontier.
2:00 Beck (Mongolian Chop Squad)Can innocent acts of kindness come back to haunt you? It does for Yukio Tanaka as he defends a rather strange looking dog which leads to an introduction to Japanese-American rock musician Ryusuke Minami.
This collimates into Yukio trying to learn to play guitar. His instructor for music and swim signs him up to play at a town festal.
3:15After This... we've got till 5:00. There is always a prospect between now (when this is written) and the actual convention that something new will turn up. So this time shot is being reserved for that infamous "to be announced".
